- Cover Crop Chart for Hawaii (Drs. Koon-Hui Wang and Archana Pant, CTAHR)
- Cover Cropping for Pollinators and Beneficial Insects (SARE)
Barley (Hordeum vulgare): By special order
- Quick-growing companion crop and nutrient recycler that produces large volumes of biomass. Excellent for erosion control and providing lasting residue. Improves soil structure and has good production, nutritional quality, and palatability for animal grazing.
- Tolerant of heat, moderate drought, low fertility, and shade. The most salt-tolerant cereal crop.
Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum)
- Quick-growing, no-to-low maintenance annual with a fibrous root system that conditions topsoil and reduces soil erosion.
- Tolerant of acidic, low-fertility soils. Low water requirement.
Mustard (Brassica juncea)
- Quick-growing crop good for early weed suppression and erosion control. Used as a biofumigant and for phytoremediation.
- Prefers well-drained, rich, moist soil.
- Superior to common oats, this no-to-low maintenance cereal produces large volumes of biomass quickly, reduces soil erosion, and is rust-resistant. Used as animal forage, cover crop, and green manure.
- Tolerant of low-fertility soil.
Oats, White/Common (Avena sativa): By special order
- Used for weed suppression, erosion control, improving soil structure, and providing lasting residue. Has good production, nutritional quality, and palatability for hay, straw, and animal grazing.
- Tolerant to low fertility and floor. Fairly tolerant to heat, drought, and shade.
Radish, Daikon (Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus)
- Excellent cover crop that improves soil nutrient content, efficiently breaks up shallow layers of compacted soil, improves infiltration, and acts as a biofumigant.
Sorghum, Bundle King Male Sterile BMR
- Quick-growing hybrid that does not produce seed in the absence of pollen. Used especially for biomass, to break open hardpan soil, and for wind breaks.
- Sorghum variety demonstrated to have improved biomass production, soil moisture and microbial content, and root-knot nematode suppression.
Sorghum-Sudan (Sorghum bicolor, Sorghum bicolor var. sudanense)
-
- Quick-growing crop used for biomass, weed suppression, erosion control, excess nitrogen storage, as a subsoil loosener, and to attract beneficial insects. Good production, nutritional quality, and palatability for animal grazing. Recovers rapidly from harvest in direct grazing and hay production. Good foliar disease resistance and nematode suppression.
- Excellent heat and drought tolerance. Good tolerance to low fertility, shade, and flood.
Sudangrass, Piper
- Quick-growing variety used for pasture, greenchop, hay, and cover crop. Known for its high protein and lower prussic acid content. Recovers rapidly from harvest in direct grazing.
